What is a Resident in Counseling?

A Resident in Counseling is a counselor in Virginia who has completed a graduate counseling degree and holds a temporary license from the Virginia Board of Counseling while finishing the supervised residency required to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Under Virginia regulations, the residency includes at least 2,000 hours of direct counseling and at least 200 hours of supervision, and the supervisor takes full responsibility for the resident's clinical work for the length of the residency (Virginia Administrative Code, 18VAC115-20-52).

At Juniper Blu, Sarah's supervisor is Jamie L. Jones. In practice, that means Sarah's work is regularly reviewed with an experienced licensed clinician, and both of their Virginia credentials are public record you can check yourself.

What we help with in Virginia

Our Virginia clinicians focus on eating disorders and body image, trauma, DBT and emotion regulation, and anxiety, OCD, and panic, with neurodivergence-affirming care through Jamie.

Eating disorders and body image. Our founding specialty, and the clearest overlap on our Virginia team: Jamie is an Eating Disorder and Body Image Specialist, and Sarah brings eating disorder treatment and intuitive eating training to a weight-inclusive practice. A difficult relationship with food, eating, or your body is worth support regardless of your appearance or size. Some situations need in-person medical support alongside therapy, and we'll tell you if that's where you are. Eating disorder therapy →

Trauma and PTSD. Some trauma is one event. Some is years of it, layered into how you relate to people, food, or your own body. Jamie is trained in attachment trauma treatment and Sarah in complex trauma, which matters because those layered histories often sit underneath an eating disorder or chronic anxiety. Both work at a pace that builds stability before going deeper. Trauma therapy →

DBT and emotion regulation. If you've been told DBT might help, or you're looking for it by name, Jamie is a Certified Dialectical Behavior Professional with advanced DBT training. DBT teaches skills in four areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness (Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotion Dysregulation, 2020). How DBT compares with CBT and EMDR →

Anxiety, OCD, and panic. For some people it's a low hum of worry that never switches off. For others it arrives suddenly and physically, as panic. Jamie is a Certified Anxiety, OCD, and Panic Specialist, and Sarah also supports people with anxiety. Anxiety support →

Autism and neurodivergence. Jamie holds autism certification and training and offers neurodivergence-affirming therapy, where the goal is to support you within how your mind works rather than change it. Neurodivergence-affirming therapy →

Is online therapy the right fit for you?

Online therapy can be a good fit for weekly outpatient support when you can be in Virginia, somewhere private, with a reliable connection during sessions.

It isn't the right level of care for everyone. If an eating disorder is affecting your physical health, you may need medical monitoring alongside therapy, or a more intensive program first. If you're in immediate danger, you need crisis support now, not a booking (see the resources at the end of this page). We'll talk through this honestly in your consultation, and if we're not the right fit, we'll help you think through what is.

Online therapy across Northern Virginia and the rest of the state

Juniper Blu Collective works with people anywhere in Virginia, including Northern Virginia communities like Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax, and Reston, where many people cross into D.C. or Maryland for work. Online therapy takes the drive and the parking out of it. Our Chevy Chase, Maryland address is an administrative office, not somewhere you visit.

Because licensing follows where you are during each session, the right clinician depends on where you'll actually be sitting. This is the short version.

What does it cost, and will my insurance cover it?

What you pay depends on your plan and benefits, so we talk through your specific situation before you start. If you have out-of-network benefits, we offer concierge support to help you seek reimbursement. We do not accept Medicaid or Medicare.

Concierge support means a monthly superbill (an itemized receipt you send your insurer) and help working through the submission. Reimbursement depends on your plan. If you're paying out of pocket, the federal No Surprises Act gives you the right to a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before you begin. More on our payment page.

How to start

Starting takes four steps, and the first one is a free consultation with no commitment.

  1. Reach out through the contact form or by phone for a free consultation. This step is for your questions.
  2. Tell us what you're looking for, including scheduling, payment, and where you'll be during sessions.
  3. Get matched with a Virginia-licensed clinician who has availability, or join the waitlist for a specific therapist.
  4. Begin secure video sessions from anywhere in Virginia.

Three things to check before booking any online therapist

Before booking any online therapist in Virginia, check that they're licensed in Virginia, that they're licensed where you'll physically be during sessions, and that weekly therapy is the right level of care for you now.

Check one

Licensed

Licensed in Virginia, not just "serving" it. Ask for the license number and look it up on the Virginia DHP License Lookup. If the therapist is a Resident in Counseling, ask who their supervisor is.

Check two

Located

Licensing follows where you physically are during a session, not your mailing address. If you live in Virginia but take sessions from an office in D.C. or Maryland, your therapist needs to be licensed there too. Say so before you start.

Check three

Level of care

Is weekly outpatient therapy the right intensity right now, or do you need more support than that?

Yes, we're welcoming new patients. Some of our therapists have openings for online therapy right now, while others are booking from a waitlist. Reach out and we'll match you with a therapist who has availability, or add you to the waitlist for a specific therapist.

Can I get eating disorder therapy online in Virginia?

Yes. Eating disorders are our founding specialty, and both of our Virginia clinicians work with eating disorders and body image concerns. For many people virtual care is a good fit. Some situations need in-person medical monitoring or a higher level of care, and part of a consultation is checking that. For support, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline is 1-866-662-1235 (weekdays).

Do you offer DBT in Virginia?

Yes. Jamie L. Jones is a Certified Dialectical Behavior Professional (C-DBT) with advanced DBT training and works with people in Virginia by video. Whether DBT, another approach, or a blend is the right fit is something you'll work out together.

Do you work with people in Northern Virginia?

Yes. We work with people across Northern Virginia, including Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax, and Reston, and anywhere else in Virginia. Because sessions are online, there's no commute.

I live in Virginia but work in D.C. or Maryland. Where do my sessions count?

What matters is where you're physically located during the session. If you're in Virginia, Jamie or Sarah can see you. If you'd rather take sessions from your office in D.C. or Maryland, Jamie is licensed there too, as are many of our other clinicians. Sarah currently sees people in Virginia only. Tell us your routine and we'll set it up correctly from the start.
